The men's winter jacket guide: the jackets that last until January
A guide to men's winter jackets: the wool overcoat, the hybrid jacket, field and flight jackets in wool and the gilet as a mid-layer - what keeps you warm in a Scandinavian winter, and what carries a suit.

A Danish winter is rarely very cold, but it is long, wet and windy, and it demands a jacket that can last from November to March without becoming dull. This is our guide to men's winter jackets: the five types we make, what each of them does, how the layers underneath make the difference, and which one is right if you are only having one. All outerwear is made to your measurements, taken in the Showroom in Copenhagen.
The wool overcoat: the one that carries a suit
The overcoat is the winter jacket when there is a suit or blazer underneath. It is long enough to cover the jacket, cut with room for it, and in densely woven wool - or wool with cashmere - that keeps the wind out and the warmth in. Camel is the classic, navy and charcoal the formal ones, and the double-breasted the one that looks most like something with the collar up. Our overcoat guide covers lengths and cuts; here we will only say that the overcoat is the one piece of winter outerwear most men cannot do without. See the overcoats.

The hybrid jacket: between blazer and outerwear
The hybrid jacket is the one we most often recommend to the man who does not wear a suit every day. It has the blazer's lapels and length but outerwear's closure and lining, and it is worn over knitwear with jeans or tailored trousers from October to April. It is warmer than it looks, because it closes tightly, and it is the closest a wardrobe gets to one jacket for the whole winter. See the hybrid jackets.

Field and flight jackets in wool: the short ones for every day
The field jacket is winter's practical jacket: four pockets, a closure right up to the neck and room for knitwear underneath. In wool rather than cotton it lasts from autumn rain to January frost, and it suits jeans and chinos. The flight jacket is the shortest: ribbing at waist and cuffs so the warmth stays in, and a silhouette that is effortless in a way the overcoat never is. Both are covered in the jacket guide, and both are made in wool for winter. See the field jackets and flight jackets.

The layers underneath: they are what keep you warm
No jacket keeps you warm on its own in February. The layers do: a roll neck or crew neck in Merino Wool directly against the skin, a gilet as a mid-layer under the overcoat or hybrid jacket on the coldest days, and leather gloves, because the hands freeze first. Merino insulates even when damp, and it can be worn under a jacket without bulk - that is why it is winter's knitwear rather than cotton. The gilet is the layer that turns a transitional jacket into a winter jacket; read more in the knitwear guide.

If you are only having one winter jacket
If you wear a suit at least two days a week: the overcoat, in camel or navy. If you wear knitwear and jeans: the hybrid jacket, in charcoal or camel. If you cycle: the field jacket in wool. And whichever you choose, choose it in wool, made to your measurements, so it closes tightly at shoulder and collar - a winter jacket that fits loosely is a winter jacket the wind gets into.
The winter jacket after winter
Wool should be aired, not washed. Hang the jacket on a wide hanger after wearing, brush it once a week, and let it rest a day between two cold ones. In spring it is dry cleaned once, hung in a suit bag and waits until November. See the full garment care guide, and see the AW26 collection's winter jackets in Scandinavian Winter.
Frequently asked questions
- Which winter jacket is best for men?
- It depends on what goes underneath: the wool overcoat for suits and blazers, the hybrid jacket for knitwear and jeans, the wool field jacket for cycling and every day. Choose it in wool and made to your measurements, so it closes tightly at shoulder and collar.
- Is a wool overcoat warm enough for a Scandinavian winter?
- Yes, with the right layers underneath. Densely woven wool keeps the wind out, and a Merino Wool roll neck and a gilet as a mid-layer handle the coldest weeks. It is the layers, not the jacket alone, that keep you warm in February.
- What is a hybrid jacket?
- The jacket between blazer and outerwear: the blazer's lapels and length with outerwear's closure and lining. Worn over knitwear with jeans or tailored trousers, it is the closest a wardrobe gets to one jacket for the whole winter.
- Which colour winter jacket should you choose?
- Camel and navy for the overcoat, because they go with everything and show in winter light. Charcoal for the formal. For the short jackets khaki, camel and black.
