What measuring is

At a measuring appointment, the designer translates your body into the measurements and proportions the suit is built from. It is not only about numbers, but about reading posture, shape and the way you move, so the finished suit follows the body rather than fighting it.

The key measurements

A set of measurements forms the basis: shoulder width, chest, waist, back length, sleeve length and leg length. The shoulder is the single most important measurement, because it sets the whole jacket, and it is the hardest to change afterwards. Details such as neck size and cuff come in as well when it comes to shirts.

Posture and fit

Two men with the same measurements can need different cuts. Posture, how high the shoulders sit, and whether the back is straight or slightly rounded, all affect how the suit should be cut. That is why the designer also asks how close you want the suit and how you tend to wear it, so the fit becomes your own rather than a standard.

The fitting along the way

Made-to-measure includes a fitting, so measurements and cut can be adjusted before the suit is finished. This is where the final details are corrected, and it is an important part of the result sitting precisely. Expect a process to take a couple of weeks from measuring to finished suit.

How to prepare

You do not need to prepare much, but a few things help. Bring a pair of shoes in the height you will wear with the suit, so the leg length is right, and bring a garment that fits the way you like as a reference. Otherwise, the best thing you can do is turn up and let the conversation start from what the suit is for.
